A rooftop tent that must be light, remain strong and fit flat
The base plate of the Fjordsen XL supports four sleeping people, sits on a car roof, and still has to be practical to ship.
The challenge
The situation
The Fjordsen XL is a rooftop tent for two to four people, designed by campers who know themselves what can go wrong on the road. The base plate is the part everything rests on.
This plate must do three things at once: be light enough to lift onto a car roof, strong enough to support four sleeping people, and compact enough to be shipped affordably and assembled on site.

What we did
Our approach
- The base plate and the corner pieces were designed together rather than separately, so that the strength is in the connection and not in extra material.
- The parts are divided so that they go out the door flat packed and only acquire their shape upon assembly.
- The corner pieces are delivered as assembled parts, so there are fewer steps left for the customer.
- From idea to production-ready design in a short time, together with the Fjordsen team.
What it delivers
The result
Light and sturdy
The plate supports the full occupancy of the tent without increasing the weight on the roof.
Cheaper to ship
Flat packed, a lot more fits in the same box, saving on every shipment.
Faster to assemble
The assembled corner pieces remove assembly steps for the customer.
