What the calculator does

Your own price, from your own file

The QDP injection molding calculator (Duiven, the Netherlands, founded 1998) works out four things from your own 3D file: the mold cost per cavity count, the unit price at your quantity, shipping with import duties to your door and the lead time to first delivery. What injection molding costs differs per product, because the mold is a one-time investment and the unit price follows from material, weight, cycle time and volume. That is why this calculator does not work with a rule of thumb but with our own production history.

We do design, mold making and injection molding under one roof, so the model works with the same cost items as our quote: the same mold prices, the same cycle times, the same machines. In our case studies you can see which products went into production here, from first sketch to full container.

The price itself, not a promise

Drag your file in and the calculator reads the dimensions, picks a mold and works out your unit price. Based on our own production history, not on a rule of thumb. The number is your starting point: if it looks right, a firm quote follows.

Costs

What does injection molding cost?

Injection molding means a one-time mold from 3,000 euros plus a unit price. Most molds fall between 3,000 and 5,000 euros, with outliers up to 60,000 euros for large, complex parts. The unit price depends on material, weight, cycle time and volume, and drops as the run gets larger. With the calculator above you work out your own unit and mold price directly, instead of relying on a rough estimate.

What the mold costs exactly depends on the shape: the number of cavities, the steel grade and how manufacturable the design is. A design that follows the rules of design for manufacturability lowers both the mold price and the unit price, and that is exactly what the calculator responds to when you drag your file in. It adds shipping and import duties separately, so you see what your product costs delivered to your door and not just ex works.

What this is based on

The unit price comes from our own cost calculation: material, machine time and tooling, just the way we calculate internally. We build your mold in house and it becomes yours, with a certificate of ownership. That is why this indication is closer to your quote than an online estimate: it is based on our real production history, not on a rule of thumb.

  • /Your 3D file stays in your own browser and is not uploaded.
  • /Shipping and import duties are listed separately, so you see the landed price.

Frequently asked questions

What does injection molding cost?

Injection molding costs two things: a one-time mold and then a price per part. The mold starts at around 3,000 euros and goes up with the number of cavities, the steel grade and the complexity of the product. The unit price follows from material, weight, cycle time and volume, and drops as the run gets larger. What it comes to for your product therefore depends on your own geometry and quantities. With the QDP calculator above you can calculate both from your own file.

What does an injection mold cost?

A mold starts at 3,000 euros, with most between 3,000 and 5,000 euros and outliers up to 60,000 euros for large, complex parts. The simpler and more manufacturable the design, the lower the mold cost. At QDP the mold is your property, with a certificate of ownership.

What determines the unit price in injection molding?

The unit price is determined by material, part weight, cycle time and volume. With larger runs the price per part drops, and a design that is easy to manufacture lowers both the mold price and the unit price. The sweet spot is between 500 and 20,000 parts per run.

How do I calculate the cost of injection molding?

With the calculator above you drag your 3D file onto the screen or enter the dimensions and weight yourself, and you immediately see your unit price, your mold cost and shipping to your door. For an exact quote, our engineers review your drawing or CAD file.

What determines the price of a mold?

The price of a mold depends on the complexity of the product, the number of cavities, the chosen steel grade, the runner system (cold or hot runner) and the expected volumes. Simple molds start at around 3,000 euros; complex multi-cavity molds run up to tens of thousands of euros. At QDP we build the mold in house, so the calculator gives a realistic indication before you even request a quote.

Can I run small batches, from 500 parts?

Yes. Many injection molders only become competitive at large volumes; our sweet spot is 500 to 20,000 parts per run, with room for runs in the millions and rush deliveries. Small runs call for a smart choice of mold, so the cost per part stays under control. The calculator takes that into account in the indication.

Do I own the mold afterwards?

If you pay for the mold, it is yours. You receive a certificate of ownership as standard, and the mold is used only for your products. That protects your investment and avoids dependence on a single supplier. Customers like Van Geloven chose QDP precisely for that clarity about ownership.

Do I need a CAD file to calculate the price?

No, you don't. With the three dimensions (x, y, z in mm) and the weight in grams you already get an indication, which is useful at an early stage when there is no CAD yet. If you do have a STEP file, drag it onto the screen: the calculator reads the dimensions, volume and wall thickness itself and the indication becomes considerably more accurate. Your file stays in your own browser.

Why is your price lower?

Because you work directly with the factory: every middleman you leave out saves on the price, and with a reseller you always pay for that extra link. On top of that, smart design lowers the product cost, because thinking in molds means cutting parts and simplifying assembly. At QDP, design, mold making and injection molding are under one roof, with our own WFOE factory that is SMETA 4-Pillars and ISO 9001 certified. The difference lies in the chain and the design, not in where the factory is.

How long does it take from mold to delivered products?

The lead time consists of three blocks that partly run in parallel: mold making, production and transport. The build time of the mold depends on its complexity and the number of cavities and is confirmed per project. The production run itself takes about 3 to 4 weeks, sea freight to your door about 10 weeks. The calculator shows that schedule as a timeline as soon as you enter a quantity.

Can I also injection mold biobased or recycled plastic?

Yes. Many products can be made in biobased plastics such as PLA or PHA, or in recycled grades of common materials; the choice of material helps determine what your product costs and what it can do. The machines matter too: energy-efficient injection molding machines use 20 to 80 percent less energy than conventional machines. At QDP, production runs on such machines in a SMETA 4-Pillars certified factory, and products get the correct recycling symbol as standard. Ask about it and we will price a sustainable option as well.
